Working to Eliminate Plastic Waste in Illinois

February 2, 2020

This session I am focusing on greatly reducing plastic pollution in Illinois along with my colleagues at the local level.  I had the honor of hosting Alderman George A. Cardenas, Chair of the City of Chicago Energy and Environmental Protection Committee, Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnen, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee of Cook County, and Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison. The issue of protecting our environment is broad and expansive, and calls for collaboration across levels of government. I look forward to working with these environmental leaders in support of environmental initiatives at the City, County, and State level.

Along with these local partners and other state legislators this week, I introduced a plastics omnibus bill that would help reduce plastic waste in our state.  This bill is aimed at reducing the amount of plastic that pollutes our state’s waterways.  Thank you to the Sierra Club Illinois, the Shedd Aquarium, and The Illinois Environmental Council for your partnership as we take these essential steps to keep our water clean.

For more information, here is a Springfield Journal-Register article about our effort and the accompanying legislation: https://www.sj-r.com/news/20200218/lawmakers-propose-regulations-on-plastics?fbclid=IwAR3Fpa3ImH4XIh_ooDJ4Zc8Yb-z6zFAxrEU43IBr-1jhFH6pMDBGD-HDdOU
