On Monday, August 15th, Rep. Ann M. Williams joined the 47th Ward Youth Council and other local elected officials for the ‘Back to School: Ban Assault Weapons’ rally in Welles Park.
Rep. Williams spoke about the decades-long push for gun violence prevention measures – from the Columbine tragedy of 1999, to the Pulse Nightclub Tragedy of 2016. However, she discussed how no tangible legislative measures were taken in Illinois until after 2018, when youth activists organized following the Parkland school shooting. She thanked the Youth Council for hosting this rally, and restated her commitment in Springfield to ending gun violence.
Rep. Williams serves as a cosponsor of HB5522, a bill banning assault weapons in Illinois. Along with Leader Greg Harris, Sen. Sara Feigenholtz and Sen. Mike Simmons, she is continuing to push for common sense gun laws that protect our schools and our communities.
