On April 10, 2023, the Dobbs Working Group of the Illinois House of Representatives issued a statement regarding Judge Kacsmaryk’s decision to halt the federal approval of Mifepristone. The life-saving abortion pill has a longstanding approval from the Food and Drug Administration; the federal judge’s ruling out of Texas threatens the FDA’s authority which extends far beyond abortion medication.
Judge Kacsmaryk, appointed by former President Donald Trump, delivered his decision almost at the same time as Judge Thomas O. Rice ruled the exact opposite in Washington. The schism will likely accelerate this issue to the Supreme Court, as Kacsmaryk’s ruling has overturned decades of scientific approval.
Abortion is healthcare. Mifepristone remains legal until at least April 14. If you have made a medication abortion appointment for the next week, you should keep the appointment and receive the healthcare you need. To read the full Dobbs Working Group statement, please see below.
