Representative Ann Williams Gives a Legislative Update Following the 2022 Veto Session

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Last week, the Illinois General Assembly wrapped up the fall Veto Session.  The priority was to pass a trailer bill to the SAFE-T Act, to go into effect on January 1, 2023.  This trailer bill updated and clarified the criminal justice reform package passed in January of 2021.

My work on the Reproductive Health and Dobbs Decision Working Group continues in earnest. As anticipated, we have seen record numbers of people crossing the border to Illinois seeking reproductive healthcare. I am committed to ensuring we take every possible step to ensure access to safe and legal abortion for Illinois residents and beyond.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the passage of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act into law, the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition released a documentary – ‘No Climate. No Equity. No Deal.’ – charting the grassroots movement behind this bill.

Last week, a comprehensive gun violence prevention bill and assault weapons ban was introduced, HB5855.  The bill includes a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and eliminates the ability for most people under 21 to obtain a gun permit in the state. I have heard from countless constituents over the years in support of similar measures and I will be supporting the bill and working toward its passage.
